Flintlock Pistol Baldric

Finally got around to fixing a broken ramrod on a pistol of mine. Got to thinking about how much I hate stuffing any pistol into a sash.  Thought about suspending it in a carrier and finally settled on this design.  Really wanted to incorporate some retention with it.

Nice looking solution.  The only problem that I see is if the RR gets loose in the thimbles it could drop out and be lost.

I too have thought about this solution; I like it. I also think a re-purposed pommel holster with a full bottom (and turned brass weight) would be a good design too.

The thought behind this rig was pistol woods walk competition. Nice safe way to carry between stations and while waiting to come to the line.  It is also would work well for hunting. The hammer is on half cock and the leather retention thong holds it down.  I have no concern about loosing the ramrod as it really is quite snug.

By calling it a Baldric, I assume this rig is worn over the shoulder?  If so, how far does it hang down?  Sort of like a modern shoulder holster?   Or is it worn around the waist?  Just wondering.

I put a 56" adjustable strap on it.  I hang it at hip level and tie it off to my belt. It is truly comfortable.

gizamo: Attached are photos of the carrier I made up for my Queen Anne pistol.  I used buffalo hide that was fairly pliable and stitched following the contours of the pistol for a snug fit.  As this pistol has a belt hook, I also stitched a small piece of leather that it slides through, securing it further.  I also carry the pistol on half cock.  I used some hemp for the strap and although not adjustable, made it up for my size.   It is much more comfortable to carry than than through my belt or sash.

Lovely leatherwork, however I am a firm believer on murfeys law. If it were mine I would sooner or later loose my ram rod. Lovely rig. BJH

I guess they will not pass the commonality test.... but this should prove they were in use during the period.

 More than one shoulder holster is known, with shoulder straps. But, I am not aware of any that are not of the gun bucket style, with a flap. Most are fashioned from cavalry horse pistol gun buckets, and show signs of this reuse. An open bottomed holster, with a short top, exposing the lock, and trigger, would be highly unlikely IMO.

Reviving this thread. This holster and the one Dave Rase made for a bear pistol are the two I’ve seen. I’m planning to build a .58 flintlock pistol as a companion piece for my favorite hunting rifle which is a .58. I’ll need to make a holster for it and the shoulder strap carry seems better than sticking it in my belt. If you carry a flintlock pistol, how do you carry it and can you show your holster?

Seems some originals encased most of the pistol.

A repurposed pommel holster would be a likely candidate. They came in all kinds of variations and levels of adornment, and with a simple shoulder strap sewn on would be as handy as a shoulder holster.

I love the strapped holster idea. Eric Ewing is making one for my Haarer .54 Bear Pistol as we speak. I got the idea from Dave’s I finally got to see in person at the Fall Frolic.
