Didn't need a range finder for this little Frankin buck. He was standing right behind my 50 yd, back stop on my cabin range.

Well done, SmyleeG. A close friend of mine has a shooting hut (old man's blind") with a small 100 yard field out in front, with 25, 50 and 100 yard target stands.
It matters now, where the moose, elk or deer stand, they are always in range.
It's an old man's blind, because it's insulated and heated.

Daryl, I got that little guy on the last day of hunting with the 62 flinter. He was small but tasty and too close to pass on the afternoon of the last day when I hadn't had a deer tag in 5-6 years.

Looks like a very nice, English styled gun - smooth or rifled?
I see a full octagonal bl. & a rear sight.

Yes an English style with straight taper 1-80 or 1-75 (IIRC ) twist. Jim Carpenter barrel and Davis late English flintlock. 100 gr. Swiss 1&1/2f 610 ball. Single blade rear sight. The 66 cal. I'm working on will have a two blade rear sight with a Charlie Burton straight taper barrel 1-85 twist. Hope to run both across the crono next summer after I get my 2nd leg.

I'm thinking the 66 will like around a 4 dram load.

Yes will do. I'm hoping to get around 1400 with a 648 or 650 ball. Cuts are around 8-10 thousands deep and wide. Can't wait for spring.

Seems to me, Dphar was getting 1,700fps with 140gr. 1 1/2 Swiss in his 16 bore rifle, with 85" twist Rayle barrel. The barrel Ed made, iirc, had about a .670 to .675" bore
(almost 15 bore .677"), so a standard Lyman .662" (16 bore) 1vounce ball mould could be used.

Thanks all! The rifle is a GRRW Hawken my dad got me for my 14th birthday. My hunting load is 100g of 2f behind a 495 ball. I have killed a lot of deer with the Hawken and never recovered a ball.

It was 28 degrees and i was in a sketchy ladder stand with no shooting rail (and barely a platform for your feet) because the wind was wrong for my normal stand. He appeared just after daylight about 70 yds out quartering to me and i let him have it. He went about 40 yards and fell.

I live in NE TX near Tyler and killed him on my own place. Mostly hardwood, pine and rolling hills here. If you go very far west you get into prairie/ mesquite.

Tks Matt - good load for a .50. You've had that rifle for a while now. Should know her well.
