Latest Southern Mountain Rifle
« on: December 02, 2021, 11:45:54 PM »
Here is my latest Southern Mountain Rifle.  This is number eight from a blank for me; and the second rifle with my own double set triggers.  It has a 45 inch Rice swamped (Allentown) barrel of .50 caliber, a Jim Chambers lock, and a nice piece of Sugar Maple.  Length of pull is 13 1/2 inches.  Drop to heel is 3 1/2 inches. Cast-off is 1/4 inch.  I also lightly greyed the iron on this one.  Aside from lock, stock, barrel, bolts, screws, and touch hole liner, all other parts are made by myself, by hand (and a few power tools).  Came out nice.

Overall, a very beautiful rifle.  I especially like the file work on the front trigger.

Not ONE thing, large or small about this rifle that is not really fine.I like the triggers and know what it takes to make them.
Leonard Meadows in Shady Springs WV made a very similar one for me in 1965 and I wish I had kept it.
I also extend these compliments to Mountanman70 on his version of this style of long rifles. These and the over the top
English Sporting rifles represent everything needed in a muzzle loading rifle. Two extremes but are my personal choice.

I think ya did a Super job on it.  Unlike the others, I would have left the squiggle
off the triggers, but that is just me.  All in all, excellent looking rifle.   ;)

This rifle did, beyond a doubt, turn out way better than "nice".  I'd be much more than satisfied with it.

For the grey I used Heritage House Parts brass darkening solution.  I think that's what a lot of builders use; or something like it.  Jim Kibler has a video on how to apply it.  This is the first rifle I've greyed the iron on.
