Back Action Lock ID
« on: January 16, 2021, 08:57:43 PM »
Recently acquired a small collection of back action locks from a fellow forum member.

Among them is a pair of percussion locks, floral engraved, but quite worn.  Barely discernable is the name "Westwood".

Are any of you familiar with this name?  When and where might they have been built?  With the exception of the hammer being cracked at the neck on the left-hand lock, they seem to be quite functional.

Wishing I still had my digital camera!

Pictures are always a big help. Your cell phone may have a decent digital camera in it. Shelby Gallien

One day my brain will turn into bits and bytes.

I ws surprised that one can actually read "WESTWOOD" - much harder with the plain eye.

Per Bailey & Nie "English Gunmakers", there were several Westwoods in Birmingham between the period of 1829-1860's.  There was also Thomas Westwood in Lichfield, Staffordshire (north of Birmingham) 1834-1850.

Many thanks, Steve.  Might be kinda fun to put this pair of 19th century locks back to use in the 21st!
