What do you guys make of this signature?
« on: January 24, 2021, 07:40:09 AM »
I have a hard time with the period style script. What name do you see here?

I am hoping some extra eyes will help make some sense of the script. I will post some photos tomorrow.

I'm going to take a long shot here and go with T.J. Burnet. Of course that might be totally wrong...have you tried doing a pencil rubbing of the signature?

Perhaps if you show the rest of the rifle with some detail photos someone might have a better chance of identifying the maker. In a sense, you are asking 'how long is a piece of string'?
I have looked at many signed rifles and to be honest, I do not recognize this signature. The decorative border around it however shows up in several schools.

My first guess is same as Elee's guess.   But my final answer is,  S F Burnet.    (I love guessing games even when I am wrong ;D

I have  looked at so many remnant signatures for so long now, I can now see signatures on a naked barrel flat & most of the time they are the maker I desire  it to be, LOL.

Avlrc you hit pay dirt. The signature on that double gun is a dead ringer for the signature on my gun. the panel engraving is the same as is the style of the lettering. Thank you for your help with solving the mystery.

Dave, thank you for posting the photos of what looks to be a very nice western PA, or eastern OH rifle. Sounds like you already have your maker identified and the background information is interesting and a bit unusual in that he was a traveling salesman. Thanks again.

I love this answer, honestly.
