Mesda inspired horn carving
« on: January 17, 2021, 08:17:20 PM »
I got the inspiration for this carving from a fraktuer in the MESDA collection. I believe it’s Quaker. I made the whole horn as if there were a style or school that turned them out this way. Turned antler applied tip, brass staple, turned maple end stopper secured with brass escutcheon pins. I have a painted hunting pouch made for it too but need the rest of the accoutrements before I can post the whole set. Thanks for looking. TC Albert

Nice one, T. C. !  I really like everything about this one, and the colors are super...is that aqua fortis?  I’m with Tim, can’t wait to see the bag you’re making to go with this set!

Stellar work T.C.!  The fraktur carving is spectacular!

I'm growing to like those turned horn tips, although I've never made one.  I don't own a lathe, although I suppose it could be done with determination and some files.

This is an old pouch and horn that was on the Cowan's auction site a while back.  The horn has a turned tip similar to the one you made:

Your horn is much nicer...

Thanks all. I appreciate the kind words. The coloring is tea baths and leather dyes.
I’ve never tried caustics.
Thanks again,
