Bobby Hoyt, 51" Long, .605 caliber Barrel
« on: January 27, 2021, 06:57:14 PM »
The Bobby Hoyt, 51" long, .605 caliber barrel that Keb just purchased has a breech measuring 1.070", a waist measuring 0.830", and a muzzle measuring 0.930".

By all reckoning, this is a pretty light barrel for its length. Without a stated weight for the barrel, how heavy of a rifle do those of you builders with experience using these extra-long barrels think this will make up in to?

Sub- 9 pounds?

Perhaps mid 7's to mid 8's. I just finished a .75 cal x 46" maple wood to 8 3/4lbs.

I made one about 10 years ago that was a smoothbore .48 caliber octagon straight barrel that measured 56"  It came from Dixie guns works in the 70's and I got two of those barrels from an old builder. Across the flats it was .675 and weighted in at 4.6 lbs without a breech.  Total gun weight was only 8.5 lbs but it was the most unwieldy 8.5 lb rifle I've ever shot.  5lbs of that weight was ahead of your front hand and set the balance point far forward of the ramrod entry pipe. I wont use the other to build  in that configuration again unless I swamp to mimic a fowler.   My father had Mr. Getz  make a custom barrel in the early 70's (Marked #235) that is a trade gun barrel with an exaggerated beauty ring. It measures 54" but it probably only weights 3-3.5 lbs.  It hasn't been used on rifle yet but I feel that one would balance well. as most of that weight is in the breech.

That’s a really light weight barrel. I’m betting 8 lbs depending on wood and castings.BJH

I almost bid on the barrel, because my common sense was telling me that it would build into a very light rifle for its bore size. But, I am just too far out from being able to use one to justify the purchase right now.

A Mike Brooks style buttplateless simple rifle would be right up this barrel's alley.
