Building my Bonewitz
« on: January 27, 2021, 02:54:51 PM »
Hello all. My name is Brett Davis and I wanted to thank Mr. Paul Allison for is patience and guidance through my first build 1 year ago. It took me 9 months to acquire all of my parts, especially the reeves number #8 bp. and stock wood. Here is my finished John Bonewitz 54 cal. rifle with Rice golden age barrel and Dale Johnson lock from Chambers. I am really thankful for Paul's friendship and instruction. I am truly humbled that this man took the time to teach me how to build in this longrifle culture. Thank you for an amazing journey and introducing me to those good men down at the LMLRC.

My first build reduced the value of all the parts. This is an outstanding first time rifle.

Paul Allison has been my teacher for many years and if u can handle the criticism and put up with minute details, he's a great teacher!  I owe him a ton like Brett.  The difference is Brett took off immediately as noted by his pictures (and I still lumber along 🤣).  I saw this rifle when being shot at our club and it's a beauty for sure.  The man's got talent!

Looks to me like a good teacher had a good student.

You have a very attractive rifle there, and quite an impressive first effort.

There is definitely a lot of natural talent there! Paul Allison is a mentor for me as well, but my work doesn't come anywhere close to that. Some us us have it and some of us don't. Brett certainly has it.

Bret know the man very well. He is the one that started me probably 30 yrs. ago. Very giving and willing to teach so long as your willing to listen.  I still talk with Paul frequently. As for your first gun, very nice to say the least, some more pics of patch box and carving please. StevenV

Nine months to gather the parts.... That rifle will be shot, passed down, sold ,traded and shot again long after we are gone. Nice job.

Great job, Brett, and welcome to the obsession!  You did it the right way having someone talented like Paul to mentor you through the process.  What’s next?

It always amazes me just how good some first builds can be. This one stands out as what I would like to see more of. Really interesting and well done!

My next build will be helping my 10 year old daughter put together a Chambers Little feller kit in 50 caliber and I am also trying to gather parts for a Jaeger.

You did an amazing job!  As Mr. Roller and others have said, my first rifle also reduced the value of the parts. LOL.  Good luck with one for your daughter. Always good to get more young ones involved in the sport, especially the girls..... Rick, proud father of two daughters.
