Colonial American Longrifle Kit from Jim Kibler in 54 cal
« on: January 22, 2021, 12:57:57 AM »
I just ordered the Colonial American Long rifle Kit from Jim Kibler in 54 cal. I am a first time builder and very excited. They had a 6 week delivery on their web site. Bought several books and have been watching videos from Jim. I am just curious if people brown the barrel or blue the barrel or ?

Hi oldhunter1954,
I just did a quick search and found this short thread...
https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=14862.msg139524#msg139524

I had it in my mind from answers to my own questions that browning became common AFTER the Colonial Period and the thread  supports this. I'm sure more experienced members will chime in one way or the other.

You will love your Kibler kit! I'm working on one as a break from a plank build.

Hope this helps!
John

Your picture of a fire extinguisher front and center is a good reminder for shop safety. I'm sure that many of us (including me :-[) keep saying that I am going to get one someday.........

I see you also have a Virsa Vise!
Have you used it before?

You can not go wrong either way.

Also, review Jim Kibler's video on applying the patina solution he sells and rubbing it back.  Many of his rifles on his website were done that way.

Now there's a great thing to put on your Christmas list for when your wife says you are so hard to buy gifts for.

Answer to delivered-
I used the Versa Vise for 30 years and just replaced it with the Woodcraft vise in Dec..20.
So far, I like the Woodcraft vise a lot more!

I blued my barrel on the .54 Colonial and left the lock in the white.

Ordered mine at the end of August. Katherine says the 45's should be going out in a few weeks.

That is great news, I have a 45 SMR on order as well.  Can’t wait.

Also ordered a .54 Colonial kit at the end of December, I see they have a longer wait now.  Chisel set is on order and already received a few drill bits and tap set that were on the list to complete the kit.  Seen a few videos and lots of reading, and still unsure on stock and metal finish.  Never built one before but figure that the Kibler kit might be the easiest kit to complete and is rumored to have a decent lock.  If this one comes out well, next kit might be a Brown Bess or a set trigger long rifle in a smaller caliber.

I have that same kit ready to start, though my stock is Cherry. I was also wondering about the barrel. I often brown them, but may leave it in the white. I will probably knock off the sharp corners on the flats, use a steel buffer wheel and use vinegar to grey the shine. Not sure though. Best wishes on you build!
