Classic J.P.Beck

         I recently completed a classic J.P. Beck rifle for a client.  The client wanted one built very close to the one illustrated in Dave Hanson's book.   This is certainly a challenging rifle to build and get right.  I hope that I have done the original justice.   Beck's style of engraving is certainly different.  I believe that it could almost be compared to sketching.  There are few continuous lines in his leafy designs. each short line is set inside the lower line.   I luckily have outlines from several Beck rifles and find that his architecture seems to fit most people very well.  The hardware was cast from original Beck hardware., this also helps in getting the architecture right.  The gun is a 50 cal. and will be used for hunting on the west coast.  Hope you enjoy it.

Wonderfully executed. The engraving is just how I like to see it. Light and airy for lack of better words.

Beautiful work! I particularly love the "foxtail and tulip" design just above the patchbox hinge. Very graceful, as is the entire piece!

Ron, that is one fine looking build.  I see what you mean about the engraving more like sketching, very well done.  What really caught my eye is how you executed the PB hinge.  Looks to my eye like the hinge was formed then formed again to give the second rib.  I really like it.

      Thanks for the nice comments on the Beck rifle.  Beck had some very unique traits in his building.  Tommy, the hinges of the patchbox are unique.  there was a whole thread here on the ALR sight on how this was done.   The engraving was unique and also had little parts dug out with a round grave.  Some collectors reference these as duck heads, because if you turn the patchbox in the right way they actually look somewhat like a duck's head.  All kinds of interesting things in a Beck build..
