Rusty junk reclaimed
« on: February 12, 2021, 05:10:11 AM »
A friend said he had some iron but it was too rusted to use. Here is a before and after of some really rusted wrought iron junk I dug out at the antique store/barber shop I go to. I think most of the stuff in the pile was old lightening rods. This will be a rear section (grip rail) on a southern mountain style trigger guard. The flattened part of the weld should end up being the curl I hope. I like wrought iron for forge welding. I also like to see the texture or grain in the finished product.

I admit, I'm a bit of a scrounger. I save old iron, too. I salvaged some clinch rods out of an old boat a few months ago. The boat was built in 1925 and some of the rods were just as sound as when they were put in.

Nice work. Still learning on mild steel. Haven’t come across wrought iron to try yet.

Thanks for showing us. Helps me get better.

Nice forgings, David! Try soaking them in vinegar for a few days after you hammer them, it makes filing a lot easier by cleaning the scale. It will also show the grain to a slight degree, so you might experiment with soaking them after you finish file.
