GRRW Barrel Q
« on: February 16, 2021, 02:59:06 AM »
Did Green River make any swamped barrels back in the day?  I have a friend who showed me a picture of one a guy has that he knows.  I’m trying to poll the audience to see if it was ever a factory option.

Your thoughts?

I got a tapered barrel from them in 1997. I think there were other options.

I've never seen one at the factory or since. Carney Pace would be the guy to ask as he made a ton of barrels there.

Green River Rifle Works of Roosevelt, Utah did not offer swamp barrels as a regular catalog item, but that doesn't mean that they didn't experiment with making some or that some of the employees didn't make some for themselves.

Someone posted some pictures of a swamped barrel that had a "GRRW" stamp not long ago.  The "GRRW" stamp looked ok, but the caliber and twist stamp was on a flat rather than on the face of the breech end of the barrel.  I think someone might have added those stamps later.

One of the successors to GRRW, a company named Green River Barrel Co. in Grand Junction, CO did offer swamp barrels.  I have one of their catalogs from 1983 and show a few pages from it below.  One page has diagrams for their swamp barrels.

Just to reiterate, Green River Barrel Co. was a successor to GRRW.  They bought the barrel making equipment that GRRW had used and tried to continue the tradition.  They changed some of the specs such as the twist rate for the larger calibers from 1:60 to 1:66 and probably made other small changes in the manufacture of their barrels.

Track of the Wolf carried their barrels for a few years.  This is from Track's Catalog #11.  There probably are a number of these barrels out there.

I see Carney twice a week.  We shoot .22 gallery tomorrow night and eat burgers and drink beer.  He is on this forum and will speak for himself.  I had a Green River Barrel Company barrel from Track, it had a loose spot in the bore and I sent it back.

Carney is a member here and posts from time to time.

Pictures above are of Bob Black. He was also an official scorer for the Longhunter Society and scored my record book Pronghorn. He had an original Tennessee long rifle in his home in Grand Junction as I recall. This was after Green River Barrel sold their barrel making equipment to a firm in Las Vegas. One of Bob's rifles that he made had "poot" engraved on the top flat. Funny story about why.
