A few knives
« on: March 16, 2021, 06:52:49 PM »
Here are a few knives I made a couple months ago - all were for customers, just sharing pictures!

This first one was a "retrofit" - My customer had a really nice pouch and horn set that when purchased had a modern style knife in the sheath. I tried to add some details that would help it harmonize with the set yet still stand alone. The handle is black ash burl

This one is a half tang knife for a new deer hunter. The handle is made of briar burl - his grandfather had made pipes and the family still has pieces of the material. Sort of boucheron inspired, but sort of not. The handle shaping on this and the previous knife is somewhat similar to one I made for gunmaker Brad Emig a while back.

Third one - a hunting knife with elk antler handle , made for a relative who killed her first elk last year.

Man, those are Good look'n. I would have thought that the one made from the burl would have had more figure but the Black Ash seems to have out done it. What is that at the top of the burl handle? Looks like a band of some sort.

Ian,

All beautiful work.  Really nice job on the retrofit.  The set looks good together.

Yes... that first knife found its home with that set. All 3 are finely crafted. Thanks for sharing.

REALLY nice knives!  Even more special to the new owners with handle material that has a sentimental connection.  I like all of them.

Thanks everyone for the kind words! Tim, I think what you're talking about is what would have been the face plate of a brass ferrule that I started to make and didn't use. At some point I had decided to carve in " mock bolsters" on the handle. Went well but when I was dry fitting everything it seemed like it needed something more.
