New toy

Finally finished my new toy, just need to go and try it out.
.54 cal, gain twist, 42 inches ,barrel by Corelaine. Used vinegar stain,and finish with Keith Casteel oil finish
Next thing to practice metal engraving.
But she is good to go.
If there is one thing that i really like about it, it fits me like a glove and that was priority over all else
Next one i need better lighting i miss some spots on my wood darn it, now waiting for some parts for my loading rod that is tapered 5/16 to 3/8
But it’s my deer rifle.

Frman:  congrats on building another nice rifle - hope it shoots as good as it looks.

Is that a functioning patchbox or just an inlay...I don't see a hinge?

Frenchie, you did a nice job on the metal and wood - your carving looks great.

.54 is also my favorite hunting caliber, but I've never handled a gain twist weapon.

You can be proud of yourself carrying this longrifle out in the woods.

very nice work.  Really like your car hinge idea. one of the things I really don't like about conventional PBs is the perpendicular straight line  protruding above the surface. Would love to see a close up of the patch box. It looks like you did an excellent job on that too.

This will be interesting to see how it shoots with that gain twist. 0-96 is a twist I have not ever heard of before. It might like lots-o-powder.

With a snug load, 1 in 96" should shoot reasonably well, certainly hunting accuracy with 120gr. 2F.
That's an easy shooting load in a .54 with that flat a butt plate, held in the shoulder's pocket.

Please keep us updated on what load you like best. I have a 54 that i am trying to work up a load for at this time. My barrel is 43" and 1-70 twist.

Oldhunter, I've got a 42" 54 barrel with a 1:72" twist. I shoot 80gr of 3F and have had excellent results. I do not vary the  load for distance.

Same here I’ll try to find the right load that it wants to digest and that will be it, anyway the farthest deer ever shot is 100 yards mostly i get those critters witching 40 and closer
