Swivel breech turkey
« on: May 21, 2021, 03:13:09 AM »
My swivel breech gun has two fifty four cal. barrels, one smooth and one rifled.  I have shot some deer with the rifled barrel and thought it would be nice to add a turkey to the smooth barrel.  I decided to do some testing to see if I could get an a combination of powder,  wad , and shot that would do the job.  After trying  several combinations I settled on 65 grains of three  F  powder and a 100 grain powder measure of no. 8 shot.  I wanted to use more powder but my 83 year old body couldn't stand the recoil.

The attached pictures will tell the story.

This next pictures is a view from the back side of the paper target.  You can see the holes more clearly.

It worked.  Eighteen lb. at 20 yds.

Well done, David. 1 3/8oz shot - pretty skookum load for a .28bore.
At 20yards, it sure did the trick. Lotsa head and neck hits and with #8
shot, likely none made it through the wings into the body.

Daryl,
I forgot to mention my loading procedure .  Powder, one thin felt wad, shot, one thin felt wad on top. All my testing was fired from a sitting position.  While I was at it I thought I would try my rifle barrel from the same sitting position.  Tell you the truth I would just  as soon shoot my rifled barrel at the turkeys but of course I can't it is illegal.   see attached pictures.  There are actually seven shots on the paper.  The fifth shot is the one in the beak.
