New Patchknife

I have decided to make myself a new shooting outfit (bag, horn, knife, measure set).   I have made the bag and will share that a little later, but I made a neat little patchknife for myself on Monday in just a few hours.   I was amazed how easy it went; no major problems this time.  I guess the fact that it was a small blade made it easier.  It has a blade forged from 1075 and is set into an Axis deer antler handle.   The blade is held in place with a poured pewter bolster.   Unfortunately,  I forgot to drill a "pin" hole through the tang and antler.   The consequence was that the bolster/blade jiggled a little once the pewter cooled.  Fortunately,  I was able to get a little thin CA under the bolster and all is well now.   I have shared a couple of pictures.   I will share a photo of the finished outfit when it is done.  I have spent more time working of the sheath than the knife.   It has been harder than I thought to make a sheath to attach the knife to the bag strap so that I can actually use it.

Very nice. How does the poured pewter act to hold the blade in place? I’ve played around with a few purchased blades, wood scales, and brass rivets but not advanced beyond that.

It fills the hole surrounding the blade tang.  I am depending on the fact that the tang and hole is not uniform.   I should have also drilled a hole in the tang and through the bolster area of the antler.  I forgot to do that and had to resort to some thin CA to keep the bolster/tang assembly from jiggling in and around the antler.

I took some photos of the pouch I put with this patch knife.    It is another one of the diary cases from Jim Webb's book.  I just changed the flap design a bit.  I didn't like the first one I did.   I also used linen thread for the embroidery on this pouch whereas I used cotton embroidery floss on the first bag.  Unfortunately,  the linen darkened more than the cotton when the oil was applied to the bag.   So,  the embroidery design doesn't stand out as much as I would have liked.

Love the blade shape and overall design. If you want to put a pin, all u need is a cobalt bit. It should drill without any trouble.

Beautiful set, Mark!  I can’t wait to see the horn you create to complete the suite!  I’m working up the nerve to attempt a copy of one of those diary case bags...I think they are super neat.

Nice looking set-up Mark, I really like the shape of the knife, and agreeing with Marcruger I like the embroidery toned down a bit, for my eye it accents the bag nicely.
