I am finishing up oiling the stock of this Kibler build. It's a .45 that I made especially for a hunt I am going on in Tennessee in October.
It's the Southern Mountain model, which I did just a bit of incise carving and did a star inlay. I also modified the comb, gently sloping the nose lower toward the wrist.
I hope to sight this in tomorrow. It holds very well and the sight picture seems great for my eyes.

Thanks folks. It's a beautifully balanced piece too, and really light. It will be so fun shooting this rifle. Somehow I think it'll shoot like a champ

That is one nice rifle Bob. You did a beautiful job with the finish, I really like the color and the hunters star. Sure is making it harder for me to not want one of these SMR's. I have heard in .45 it has nice balance. If you don't mind could you tell us what you used for stain? Thank you.

Thanks again for looking and for the compliments. I think the .45 SMR will be a fine deer (and/or hog) rifle.
The stock is a premium Curly Maple, and Jim and Katherine selected one with some Birdseye in it for me. It's not easy to see since the wood is stained rather dark but up close around the wrist it's visible. Just some nice swirling in the grain.
I achieved the color using a variety of powdered dyes in a water base, which helps seep the color into the wood. It's not complicated but it does take a lot of BLO applications to seal it well.
I also deep-browned the barrel using DGW's cold browning solution. I got some nice, deep pitting which I was going to buff down to the gray but decided I liked it dark as well.

Bob, I see a beautifully done rifle. Great color and wood on it. I do like the way you did the carving and star. Sometimes less is more, simplicity shines through. Best of Luck on the hunt.

Thank you REDRIVER II. Yup, I agree- simple doesn't mean easy- you nailed that one! Spoken from experience I gather.
My next project(s) ar two Cherry stocked Colonial Kiblers arriving tomorrow (one will have a sliding wood patch box and the other will gey a brass one), both of .54 calibre.
I also have several powder horns to carve.
On top of that, three more custom Mountain Dulcimer orders to do.
My summer and Autumn will be quite fun

Thanks- It has a lollipop tang that extends down the wrist to the comb. Swamped barrel. (This is from a Kibler kit). Hope your Pecatonica build is enjoyable- I like their stuff a lot.
