Steel Buttplate
« on: June 06, 2021, 10:39:51 PM »
I’m working on a full stock Hawken and using a cast steel buttplate. I need to bend the plate some as I fit it to the stock. Should I anneal it first and if so, how?

Bending the butt plate for other than squaring up the butt plate it self it shouldn't have to be annealed in my experience to make small adjustments to the contour. Some castings have a twist in them, if its a lot send it back to get a replacement. I like cleaning up the casting making it square then getting the wood off that doesn't belong.  I like to peen the butt plate in the final phase of the job and tap it home to close up any small gaps along the edges after I get my screws in place. As your inletting improves you will have less peening needed in the end.

Post a picture of the butt plate and where you want to bend it, and how far.  I've changed the arc of the butt plate by bending cold on numerous occasions, without a problem.

I spent some more chisel and rasp time and it’s almost there. No need to bend it. Thanks for the help!!
