P. W., give Brownell's product Five "F" Stock rubbing compound a try. It has an abrasive suspended in a liquid that you rub in with a soft cloth or a felt pad. you can pretty much control the gloss or stain look you want by how much and how hard you rub. It will also do a splendid job of cleaning up the scratches in plexiglass, as an example. And yes, I have tried pumice and rottenstone. kept winding up with a "grand piano finish"!
