Barrel Mark ID?
«
on:

I recently came across this contemporary fowler. The only marks on this gun are at the breech, and look to be 9's or 6's and a "W".
Is anyone familiar with these marks?
Thanks.

I don't know, but they look like proof marks (or replica proofs) to me. Good luck with your search. God Bless, Marc

The gun appears to be a Chambers Officer's Fuzzy.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Remove the barrel from the stock, and look on the bottom of the barrel. It's either a Rice, a Getz, or a Long Hammock barrel. It's definitely one of our English fowlers.

I removed the barrel and found these marks underneath. I am unfamiliar with these marks. Any thoughts?

Someone has definitely filed to barrel maker's name or mark off the barrel and added some very crude engraving. Now, there's no way to tell who made the barrel.

Thanks Jim. Those marks are certainly crude and seem to have little meaning. It does look like original marks were removed. All that remains is the number "3" faintly visible at the breech.
