Gents,
These horns are not mine.
I saved the images from an auction in the UK a year or three ago,
Thuringia,
First image C 1830 second, C 1840.

How do they get the great contrast? Is the antler relief carved, then the background stained, or are there actually different colored layers in the antler? The carving is exquisite. Shelby Gallien

I'm sure you're right first time; the horn carved and then the background stained. (very carefully I'd guess!)
