Examples of basic southern style pistols
« on: June 23, 2021, 12:06:50 AM »
I'm beginning a .40 caliber pistol and I want to keep it southern in style.  Also want to keep it basic.  It's a walnut stock with a straight tapered barrel that I think was made by Dave Rase.  I've seen several on here in the past that struck my eye but forget who built them (maybe Joe schell or others.  I like the looks of the grips that go straight down and have a flat butt with a plate.  Any pictures you may have of your personal or others I would appreciate seeing.

Thanks in advance for any responses posted

Scottmc,

A couple of years ago a neat basic southern pistol was listed for sale here on the ALR and I saved some screenshots of it in a Word document.  I still have the file saved and will gladly email it to you.  My initial attempt to covert a screenshot image to a photo that could be uploaded here didn't work out.  Send me a PM if interested.

Here's a little .32 I built this past spring. It's got a 3/4" rice rifle barrel cut off.  I find this straight grip more comfortable/stable to shoot that the birdshead kentucky style grip.

Martin9,

Very graceful pistol.  I have a very slim .32 swamped 12" barrel from Charlie Burton.  I think you just showed me how I going to use it  :)

Thank you. It's a fun little gun. Even with the rifle twist..1-48, it shoots great with only 20 grains of 3f. Gonna try to get a couple squirrels with it this fall.

Martin, thanks for the picture. That is kind of what I'm envisioning.  Is that a flat steel plate on the bottom of the grip?

Yep, just a flat chunk of steel I dug out of the ground where an old barn/shop was on my property. It's fairly thick so does help balance the muzzle a bit IMO

Bingo!!  That second one is the one I was picturing but couldn't remember who made it.  I thought maybe you but wasn't sure. Between yours and martin, I have what I need now.  Thanks!

Joe, these pictures are a perfect example of how you can combine an interesting background, and a detailed well lighted picture. Getting good and close, and making sure the light source doesn’t come from too far below the subject, or too far above your subject, casting detail hiding shadows is very important. Thank you for the great examples.
