My first flintlock is complete
« on: September 21, 2022, 01:37:16 AM »
I received my SMR kit in February 2022. After opening the box, I saw the quality and precision of the kit. I knew immediately this rifle was well designed and that only the slightest fitting of parts was necessary. Being my first flintlock and having little knowledge and even less understanding of its operation and design, I began a deliberately slow build, reading, studying, asking questions over forums, and learning as I progressed, making mistakes, stopping the build while learning how to correct them. I set the last pin on Monday evening, September 19, 2022, and tightened the last screw. I applied Briwax Tuesday afternoon, September 20, 2022. Some of you have provided encouragement and direction along the way. You have no idea how indebted I am to you. Attached are pictures of the finished Kibler SMR in .32 caliber. You will see flaws, I’m sure. But that’s okay because the builder has plenty of them also. Comments are encouraged. Now I will learn how to enjoy and safely and accurately shoot it!

Kibler fancy maple stock
Iron Nitrate stain
Permalyn sealer finish
Jax black metal finish rubbed back for aging
Light brown Briwax for protection

You can be proud to say you own a quality rifle you built.  Enjoy yourself, it looks like a fine rifle.  Are you going to use it for hunting squirrels?

Also, did you run back the permalyn finish at all? It looks great. Not too shiny or plasticy from what I can see.

I plan to use permalyn on my rifle and think I'll try to use the rottenstone/toothbrush rubbing back technique

Oh, I am proud of it. I worked on it from Feb. 22 until Sept. 22. But there are some things I wish I had done differently. Regarding the finish, yes, I did rub back the permalyn. Also, the first coat was heavy, but the wood soaked it up quickly. I did a light rub for any remaining whiskers and added a light coat. I repeated this three times, rubbing back after each application. I gave it two days to thoroughly dry. Then, of course, I had to order the Briwax. I recommend testing on scrap wood, I didn't do this, and I should have. I applied three light coats of Briwax buffing until the buffing cloth moved without resistance. I had never done anything like this, but I approached it like I would finishing a shotgun stock which I have done several of. I learned that there are differences between the two, but basic finishing principles apply to both. Thank you for your kind words. They are appreciated very much.

Terry you were able to maximize your learning from the Kibler kit and therefore you will also maximize your enjoyment. It looks great, something that I'm sure you will cherish for a long, long time. The extra fancy maple stock turned out very nice and the metal finish compliments the overall look.

Terry,
You did a great job! If this is your first, hope you will have many more to come. Did you use the Jax Black on your barrel? I really like the look of your metal finishing. Gives it that “slightly used but not abused” look of a well kept and cherished rifle.

Originals had flaws too, part of their charm. Nicely done. You have a beauty there, a real keeper.
