Another SMR
« on: July 19, 2021, 06:48:08 PM »
I wanted one in 45 cal.  I sold my 45 a couple of years ago.  The newer ones are even better.  The lock is made like a Swiss watch.  I prefer the shorter barrel.  My spring scale say a hair under 7#.  I used gloss spar varnish diluted 50/50 with lacquer thinner and a dash of Japan dryer.  I wiped on half a dozen thin coats and rubbed it back with automotive rubbing compound.    I think I like the satin varnish better.  The stain was AF, tannic acid, and various dye stains. The barrel was done with BC plumb brown and allowed to after rust.  It was draw filed and blended with maroon scotch brite.  The patch box is my own.

That is a FINE looking rifle.  You’ve done a great job finishing this out.  I really like the color of the stock.  Nice work!

I have the SMR in 40 caliber. It was one of the first kits that Jim put out before it was available in 45 caliber. Love that rifle and am seriously considering getting one of the new ones in 45.

I just got back from the range.  It has definite accuracy potential.   At 25 yards it was almost a touching cluster.  At 50 the mirage and disappearing front sight issue came into play.  The bore is very, very smooth.  I did not need to wipe hardly at all.  I was using 60 gr 3F, 440 ball, 0.016 soapy patch.

I will make "old man" sights and do further load development.  For my eyes I like a front sight that is about 0.110" wide and taller.  The rear will be a slit.  I set them up so they view like partridge pistol sights.

The  issue sights are HC.  The front was right down on the barrel to get it zeroed.   They look good but are more suited to younger eyes.

Nicely done Sir.  I'll be ordering the .45 SMR right after this Colonial I just received is made.  I'd like to see the new old man sights on it.  Best of Luck.
