Butternut for gunstocks
« on: August 03, 2021, 05:16:07 PM »
I have a chance to get several butternut planks. I know that the wood is very desirable for carving. It seems to have been frequently used for duck decoy carving. It is not as hard as walnut, but very close in appearance. Has anyone used it for stocking a gun?

I have seen some antique Mt. rifles in butternut. IMO, it's too soft for gunstocks.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

If you can get them for a good deal or good price I'd grab them just to keep them around, maybe for other projects.  But gunstocks - nope.  More aggravation than anything else.  Not saying it *can't* be done, just not to my way of thinking worth it when so many better wood choices are still easily available.

Thank you for the replies. I will let the boards go to a carver who is very keen to get them. I am not looking for more aggravation than necessary.
