checkering a New England rifle.

I am building a New England rifle. I have never checkered before and don't know what type of checkering tool to use on the wrist. If I chicken out and not get into checkering would it be wrong to not have it on those types of guns.

I have made some tools and purchased a book, practiced a bit and will get on with my challenge soon. There may be some useful info in a recent thread "Checkers anyone". It is a skill that can put a gun over the top and there are some fellas here who can help. Good luck.
