Mike, I think most everyone on this site visits the Blog either just before, or after coming here, and is too busy cleaning the drool off their keyboard, before going on to the CLA site or their emails, so they forget to post a comment.  I think it's slightly understated to say Jud's gun is inspiring.  WOW is more like it, and that goes for your most recent one by the way!

Geeze, Mike, you crabby today? That is  a beautiful gun. Lovely lines, color and wear. Like the thumbpiece a lot.

Thumbpiece complete with charming misspelling: "constituitonal."

And I love that barrel. Actually long enough for those of us with excess verticallity.

Not crabby, just surprised no body made comment on what I thought was a good piece of work. I rarely get to see Breenans' work when it isn't dripping in decoration. Very refreshing to see a plainer gun from him. I wish  there was a shot of the tang carving.

What's not to like? Even his plain guns are a cut above the rest. They just have an artistic flair to them that draws the eye to them!

I'm sure he was as engulfed in his work as most are looking at it, but the thumbpiece is misspelled.  I only noticed after studying the gun for quite awhile.  If somebody knows him, I'm sure he'd want to know.

There are any number of instances of incorrectly spelled words on objects made in the 18th century.

Not only mis-spelled words, but many folk mis-spelled their own last names.

eg: Kuntz, Koontz, Coons.

Tom,

How can I mis-spell my own name?  It's my name and I can spell it any way that pleases me!!!! (grin).

Very true, while doing a little geneology i found that in the early 1900's i had several generations of  family living in the same little farm house. i couldnt believe that they spelled the last name 3 diffrent ways. Belew, Bellew and Beleau. we are in Arkansas but that is a little much!

Spelling was phonetic "as heard" for a long time until the nation became widely literate and standardized spelling took hold. Regional accents and pronunciations did not help either.  our history is filled with misspellings of mispronounced misheard words  Spell-check has not helped especially with proper names.

it was still MAJOR problem with foreign names (including french and french canadian names) and it still is.

One of Jud's guns that I really liked was a basic "barn" gun.   Some of you may remember it......kind of red in color but
rubbed off in the wear areas to show the yellow thru......big 60 cal. gun.   A local friend of mine now owns it and it will
probably be at the Lewisburg show...........Don
