Levin T. Stack, Jamestown. Love the condition and the old repairs. Don’t let anybody screw with it.

I thought the striping looked natural. They did a really good job of it

I also thought the striping looked natural. I would want to see it to be sure.

Me too - the striping appears to have a wavy appearance to me. The wrist and ahead of the lock panels looks so natural.

That looks like a good one.  When I was in Greensboro in June visiting my dad, I met a guy that showed me his Jamestown rifle.  He said he'd tried to buy it for many years, and just got it a few months prior, so I know he'll keep it a long time now.

It says "Jamestown" all over it.  They sure produced a ton of guns in that Piedmont town.  You'd never know it today.

I am not surprised to hear it was found in the mountains Dana.  Jim Webb told me he saw period shipping records of huge numbers of plain, common rifles being shipped out of Jamestown to the mountains.  The same for Salem, NC.  We tend to think that most mountain guns were made in the mountains, but many were made in Piedmont, NC.  I'd loved to have seen those wagons loaded up.

It is a pity that so many plain, common guns got used up and eventually discarded.   The Knoxville show was super because we got to see so many on one place.

God Bless,   Marc

Hi Dana,
Nice to see you have decided to upgrade your collecting interest.  Better later than never (laughs).

Levin T. Stack was born in 1827. He lived and worked on Wendover Ave. just west of Hickory Grove Methodist church.  He died in 1888 and was buried in the churches cemetery near Solomon H. Ward's grave.

Signed rifles by Stack are not common.  I have owned four of them over the last 41 years.  The rifle was sold with a bullet mold  with the same Roman numeral stamped on the top flat, that matched the number that was stamped on the barrel behind the rear site.

The brass side plate is a replacement.  I cannot tell from the photos if the grain on the stock is real or artificial.  I have owned some that were hand painted that could really fool the eye. I have owned others were they dipped a string in aquafortis or acid and then wrapped it around the stock that produced similar results.

I hope you can buy this one.

Thanks,

Michael Briggs
