Multiple patchboxes on rifle?
« on: September 28, 2021, 04:13:10 AM »
I don't think I've seen a posted build of a rifle with this odd feature but here's an historic example of such a gun. Anyone built a gun with more than one patchbox? Any long term issues with removing that much wood?

I had the impression that many of these guns had the second box added when the gun was converted to percussion to store the caps. This gun could have been converted back to flint and retained the extra box.

There's quite a few Wv made longrifle of late flint, percussion era that have 2, sometime a trap in the toe.
Whiskers Wv builders shows several.
Hope this helps. Best regards Dave  8) 8)

Ditto. I've seen pictures (maybe here) of a Southern rifle with a trap on the bottom surafce ahead of the toe
as well as a double 'patch box', one ahead of the other, on the right side - again, Southern Rifle.

Some guns from West Virginia have a small box under the cheekpiece, as well as a regular patchbox.

I made a few of them about  10-12 yrs ago.  Here is an example.  Not nearly as elaborate as your the
example, but more of what I felt would be possible if a gunmaker was attempting to add a feature for
just caps or whatever.
