Leman Trade Rifle 1st Build
« on: October 03, 2021, 05:42:27 PM »
I've been a long time lurker on this site. Been interested in muzzleloaders ever since I was about 11. Got my first, a Lyman Trade Rifle at 13 back in '90. Fast forward to about 9 years ago. I had moved on to modern rifle and pistol shooting. I've always enjoyed trading shooting related items and while browsing the local Hi Country Shopper, I came across a .58 cal muzzleloader barrel a man had for sale in Grand Junction, CO. He mentioned that his dad used to work for GRRW and I believe had recently passed away and he was selling off some barrels and rifles. The fact that it was a GRRW barrel was lost on me at the time. I ended up buying it cheap, thinking I could trade or sell it. I showed it to a friend that happened to be a gunsmith. He took it from me and stuck it in the corner of his shop and told me he wasn't going to buy it from me or let me sell it but that he was going to help me make a rifle out of it. I was flat broke at the time just coming out loosing everything in the 2008 debacle but he said he had some wood I could have to make a stock and I could get the rest of the parts as we went along. Over the next 4 years I would go to his shop on Thursday evenings in the Winter months and we would tinker around and sometimes I would get some work done on this rifle. I was pretty gung ho at first but turned out I really enjoyed the work and kept getting side tracked making tools I needed for the job were on at the time. Now I've got 3 rifles and a TOTW parts gun all in different stages of completion. The Leman is close to finished but I made some mistakes on it and this is a long winded way of asking for help. The parts gun will be next but that's a different story. Let me tell you, it was 10 times easier to mess up on the parts gun than this scratch build. Even if the wood plank I used was a narrow bridge plank.

Here's some photos of the progress so far.

So my biggest issue other than finding the time to just finish everything is the buttstock on the cheek side. I rasped too much off between the buttplate and the cheek piece. I don't know if I can get the photo's to show the problem.

I was basing this off pictures of an original Leman for sale on an auction site. Now looking at other Lemans I'm not sure but that I would have done the cheekpiece differently.

Bison, just curious if you have the trigger in place or just the trigger plate.

I've pinned the trigger in and had it functioning but took it out while I was working on other things.
