Bridger Mountain Men October
« on: November 16, 2023, 09:09:57 PM »
This was a Buffalo hunt with a some Antelope and a few Cowbirds as non-score fun targets.

Wes made some cardboard cowbirds to mount on a buffalo for the novelty he put some 22 RF Tannerite in a <2” diameter small plastic packet on the back.
And again Dennis made all the targets.

Wes and a loaded Cowbird…

Wes won the match with a 22 and an added three dress points as dis everyone>

Dan was second with 21
Tyler shot a 20
Dean a 19
Dennis ties Dean but did not do as well on the tire breaker.
Trish and Bruce tied with 14 but Trish’s tie breaker was better by a ball width.
Mike came in last but he is our “green horn” and expect him to become the threat in the future>

Banning a snow storm the next will be Sunday the 19th and our multi species woods walk.

Anyone who lives in Montana and are not too far from Whitehall  (I am about 100 miles East) we would love to have you come to shoot. Just do a PM for directions.

Traditional ML rifles with a round ball.

That looks like a ton of fun! How are those buffalo pronghorn targets constructed? Plywood with a cutout for the gongs? How long have they held up? That is a really nice idea to create a fun little herd to "hunt."

If I knew someone from that area, this spring or summer I would give serious consideration to driving from Oregon to Montana for that shoot. It looks like a hoot.

I was shooting my Don King Flint Hawken. 54 cal 90 gr of FFF Swiss. I blew one shot or would have won the match as I a good tie breaker. But I held it too long and shot anyway. Its not a really tough match. But we have a good time. The trail walk is harder. Some shots are through gaps in trees and such and there is one long shot and a couple more that are fairly long. Maybe I will laser them Sunday.  One Buffalo has a 66%  human  silhouette laid side ways and the head painted brown and of course fairly small, it counts double so I shoot the head knowing I would likely need the extra point. I shot it first and then almost everyone else hit it too…. Figures.
The targets are ply wood and hold up pretty well really. The gongs are hung on hinges and hits on the hinge pin can cause issues with the target staying back when hit. The “plains” game are now all taken home for the winter. The “woods walk” animals, quite a diverse group,  will probably stay up.
Dennis has done and immense amount of work on these.
Last go around I was shooting a 54 Kentucky. But its been giving me fits so I loaned it to a friend who is a lot better shot to let him shoot it and see what he thinks.

These are lunch for the match. Standing paste meat pies and they are portable since the standing paste is a very hard crust and not really meant to be eaten. They are strong enough to be carried in a bag or pack, and being sealed  will keep for days without refrigeration. I had a 1 pound  “flank roast” from a somewhat tough quarter of beef I bought and it almost all fit in these. The recipe is on the Towsends youtube channel. Worth looking into if you want to explore some 18th c and earlier cooking.

Gonna make a simple but really good 18th c recipe rice pudding for dessert (the “Cheap One” from Townsends). But that will be baked tomorrow.

If you come shoot/camp with us...you will "know someone" in the area.
If you're serious about traveling we can set you up...just get in touch with me.

This is the exact moment when the cowbird's gizzard was cooked.
