.62 breech....
« on: December 02, 2022, 10:30:14 PM »
Can someone who has a .62 barrel post a picture of their inlet breech?  I am trying to see how much wood is on either side of the breech.  Thank you.

Caliber and barrel diameter have nothing to do with the width of wood beside the breech.
The lock bolster thickness minus any lock bevel determines the thickness on the lock side. The sideplate side usually is about the same thickness.

There is no strength issue. One does not adjust thickness of a stock with caliber or expected recoil.

There is zero side to side force on the gun when fired. It’s all straight back.

Hi,
Here are 62s.  The thickness of the bolster on the lock determines how much wood is on the sides.

Thanks guys. Actually, I had already been told that. DOH!  The bolster of most flintlocks appears to be around .300. I just had one of those synoptic hangfires, lol.

Hi,
That is about right on the bigger locks like Chambers round-face English lock but the thickness will be thinner for many others.  Original locks often have bolsters <1/4" thick.

Thanks Dave. The lock will be an English round face style.

Late English style FL with a Manton style recessed breech. Tape in 1/4” wide. And as stated the bore size has nothing to do with the stock shaping or width.
