Finished hardware questions
« on: October 01, 2009, 02:24:12 AM »
Is there a general rule of thumb attributed to each school of gunmaking as to;
Patchbox screws, Toe plate screws, Buttplate screws-filed flush or filed rounded above the surface? Or is this something attributed more to the individual maker?

Thanks,
Jeff

In the flint and early percussion period most wood screw heads are slightly domed. The dome is less than that on the modern commercially sold domed head screws.

When collectors see an original rifle from that period with flat topped screws they generally want to examine them to see if they are later replacements.
