What could one build with.....?
« on: October 05, 2009, 04:24:52 AM »
Several years ago, at a gun makers event, I had purchased some parts(locks and barrels) from some participating instructors. So my question is what to do with the last of a couple of parts. I have a Getz "D" 28 ga. full octagon barrel and a Chambers deluxe flint. Any suggestions what one could finish these into?

Have that D weight barrel reamed out to a twelve gauge and build you a nice fowler.

Or have the barrel rifled.

Or build yourself a smoothrifle. 28ga is near perfect.

"Smooth rifles"  seemed to exist.  Build it like a rifle with sights.

Nothing wrong with a 28 ga. bore, they will shoot a standard .530 ball real well.   The barrel is on the large side so I would probably build an early gun with it, perhaps an early Dickert, or any of those early guns shown in RCA...take your
pick.    Put sights on the barrel and shoot it just  like a rifle, and, if the opportunity arises, you can also shoot shot out of
it.   I have a friend that has killed turkeys with a 28 ga....................Don

Or build an early barn gun, one that is all worn out and been bored smooth. There is someone on this forum who builds barn guns. I forget who, but I think they are old and fairly cranky, yet might be able to post some pictures.

Brother Angus,
Sounds like a good barn gun project to me too OR make that Chamber's deluxe look a little more English and build yourself a Appalachia Mt. bear rifle.  Either way it would be a good all around hunting rifle.
Cheers,
Ken

Shumway featured an early "1770's" Lehigh smooth rifle in Muzzle Blasts in the 1980's that had a swamped full octagon barrel about 42-44" long and was .58 caliber or so.  The gun was very plain, with very strong, bold architecture.  The buttplate was about 2.25" x 5" and the guard had the remnants of the early "double spur".  It's on my "to build" list.  It was a real hoss of a gun.  If you send me an email I could mail you a photocopy of the article.
