Question regarding C S stamped lock
« on: January 01, 2022, 07:06:21 PM »
I recently acquired a Kentucky pistol kit sold by Jebediah Starr company in 2014 (invoice still in box shows this.) Current kits sold state they have an L&R Manton lock. I have two guns with Small Siler flintlocks. One was a recent purchase and I know was made by Chambers. Everything about this lock resembles the Small Siler and nothing resembles an L & R. However, neither Chambers lock has C S stamped inside of lock plate. Who are these initials? Who made the lock if it wasn't Chambers? My Chambers locks do not have these initials. Thanks.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

When Bud (C S) Siler assembled any of his locks he usually stamped them with his initials.  That lock was assembled by Bud Siler himself.

Why is the lock plate cooked in the area of the CS?

It's easier to stamp metal while it's heated to red. Maybe that's why. Not sure.

Looks like someone was trying to heat that screw with the gnarfled head and wasn't successful.

I was starting to doubt in my mind the Christian Springs part. However, I sort of feel like a dumb@ss not realizing Bud was not Mr. Siler's God-given name. That's the east Kentucky in me I reckon. I just figured mammy named him "Bud." I guess that looks better than "BS" on the lock.
