Round barrel bottom for an octagon barrel
« on: January 15, 2022, 05:11:40 PM »
I have read that a lot of originals had the barrel inlet cut round on the bottom which apparently worked just fine.

After being give a complete set (four different sizes) of round inletting tools by a great friend who inherited them and had no use for them, I thought i might give it a try on a future pistol stock to see how it goes. I have plenty of stock wood if it doesn't work out.

I know a few here have tried this, how did it go.?

This one has a round bottom barrel channel.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Works for me. I aim for getting the bottom flat to contact the wood pretty uniformly.

Key for me is stabbing in the side cuts accurately to start. Try to get the front and back of the channel to fit closely and the rest can be round touching occasionally . Lots of measurements still required.

Measuring is highly over rated....

I still need to measure for a swamped barrel

I used them on a couple of round barrels on two English trade guns I'm building. They work great.

Those round bottom scrapers are fantastic to work with - restocking an 1850's period double 10-bore, and they are doing a great job on a piece of rock-hard English Walnut.

I also have a couple octagonal scrapers from the same people, and they also work very well.

Yeah, measurements are obsolete, just use the old Mark 1 Mod 1 eyeball.  And maybe a straightedge from time to time.
