Gun kit building video
« on: October 07, 2009, 07:20:27 PM »
A friend of mine is about to start on a kit from Wayne Dunlap, and he doesn't think it comes with instructions. I was thinking of suggesting that he buy the video that Jim Chambers sells to go with his kits. Does this sound like a good idea? I am not familiar with Jim's video, but it seems it should be OK to use with one of Wayne's kits.

Thanks

Chamber's videos are good, also American pioneer has good ones as well, and they can be rented.  While they ae good, I would get  Peter Alexander's The gunsmith of Grenville County, and Dixon's book on building.  In my opinion they're mandatory reading before starting a first build.  Dunlap's kit, like most others is just a collection of parts, in a rough style, that requires a lot of research, collecting of photo's, reading, and viewing of video, as well as joining a good site, like maybe this one ;D ;D.

That said have your friend dive in, and have a try at it.

I have built a few scratch built rifles and they came out ok.I recently got a Chambers IH and decided to get the dvd with Ron Ehlert,I found it to be helpful and informative with a few neat tricks of the trade. As a  first time project I would say you couldnt go wrong.I'm guessing that the Dunlap kit wouldn't be a whole differant .If I remember correctly the biggest differance is the Dunlap kit didn't have a sideplate included.Hershals Video's are good if scratch building ,but don't get too depressed watching them,he makes it look so easy  ;D
