Need Pistol pictures
« on: October 27, 2021, 02:19:47 AM »

I recently came into posession of this swamped barrel and inletted stock.  I am not new to this game, but I am unfamiliar with a flint pistol with this type of grip.  Does anyone have some photos or drawings of what this gun should look like when finished?

Thanks,

frog

Umbrella handle is the style.Personally I think they are like a deep crescent butt plate on a rifle,an abomination.
The only pistol I built since 1963 was a saw handle and I used my 1911 to lay ot out.

Thanks everyone.  I have already ordered a small Siler lock from Jim.  A The sear on a Chambers lock on a rifle I made for my grandson chpped and Jim immediately sent me a drop-in replacement.  I therefore try to order Chambers locks directly from him.  I have noted a majority of English type locks on the photos of pistols you-all have sent.  I guess the Siler is ok.

frog walking. Sir, listed below are (3) two books you may find of interest. 1) Thoughts on the American Flintlock Pistol by, S.E. Dyke. Copyright 1959 , 1974 George Shumway Publisher. 2) The English Pistol, A Pictorial Study by, Beebe & Bingham. copyright 1980, Golden Age Arms Company. 3) The Kentucky Pistol by, Chandler & Whisker. Published February 1994. With the pictures you have and a couple of good referance books your ready to go. Have a great week end. AJ.

I think pistols are harder to get right than rifles, myself.

Certainly:  This pistol is patterned from photos of two pistols by Andrew Verner of Buck's Co, PA.  I built myself a copy of one of his longrifles a few years ago, and thought it would be3 nice to have a companion pistol to accompany it.
The rifle has a 48" Getz .50 cal barrel and the pistol's barrel is also by Getz, .50 cal and 12" long.  The two guns make a nice set.
Like the rifle, the pistol has a pure silver inlay of the double headed Prussian eagle, but whereas the rifle's inlay is along the underside of the lower forestock, the pistol's is on the back of the wrist.  The pistol's lock is by Stan Hollenbaugh and I rounded up the angular pan to make it more resemble the lock of the original pistol I was emulating.  The lock has a stout mainspring, a short choppy throw and throws sparks like a cutting torch.
Happy to answer any more questions if I have missed something...

You could make your own from sheet brass. They are easy to do. Here is a tutorial I wrote:
