Flintlock double finished
« on: February 17, 2022, 10:39:41 PM »
I started out to build a percussion, but changed my mind. 19ga. Rifled in the right barrel 1-50” twist. Smooth bore left.

Yes, indeed.  The barrels appear to be from an original?
19 bore, is .226"  Is that the bore size & not the groove size.
1 in 50" is quite fast for that bore size.

It’s.626 with equal width lands and grooves. .610 round ball with pillow ticking. Grooves are not real deep. Original barrel from flea bay, $36.00, very good bores. Breech plugs were made from TC 1” flint, with 3/4-16 thread.

Looks great , great to see something different every now and then. On a gun with two locks what holds the locks in ? Can't see from the pic are screws screwed into the opposite lock plate?          Steve   up close pic maybe

Nice "find" on the barrels.

The locks are attached to the standing breech.

Wow!  Looks great!  Would you mind sharing your stain/finishing secrets?  Thanks!  Jeff

Stained with LMF Lancaster maple, several coats. Sealed with clear shellac, sanded back. Touch up with stain. Permalyn finish, on stock and blued metal parts.

Ric, that is a fabulous piece of work.  Fit and finish are great, as is the color.  And like others, thanks for including the "recipe".

Currently re-stocking an c. 1850's double 10-bore, but percussion instead of flint.  being in English Walnut, it's not going to have a fantastic color like you have.

Thanks for showing us such good work.

Ric,
That's a beautiful build.  My buddy has a set of barrels and all the hardware and wants me to build one for him.  I was wondering how wide of a stock blank did you start out with?
