Never had this happen
« on: March 19, 2022, 10:32:58 PM »
So today I'm working in my shop, shaping the sides of a forsetock on a fowler I'm building. Was using my little Stanley smoothing plane and it is taking off beautiful thin curls of sugar maple. Got one side done the started on the other side "that side has a few small inclusions" everything working fine then about little over  1/2 done the plane hesitated for a split second &  I thought I heard a metallic "ting" and then the plane turned into a molding plane! It was leaving  a high spot right in the middle of the blade! I looked at the blade and sure enough the was a semi circle chip in the middle of the blade!
I looked at the stock and found a small round hole in the wood about a 1/32" deep but what ever it was, popped out on the shop floor somewhere! it had to be right in the middle of a small inclusion!
I dread the thought of grinding that blade back and resharpening it!

OUCH - I feel your pain.

Many years ago when I was living in NC, I wanted to hew out a mantle piece to go over my fireplace.  There had been some logging behind my home so I drug home a suitable log I found in a brush pile, hued it out with a broadaxe and mounted it over the fireplace.  It was some time later I noticed a shiny spot on the face of the mantle.  Close examination revealed it to likely be about half of a lead round ball.
What are the chances!

I found a piece of lead shot in this one a couple years ago. What are the odds? ???

I found a piece of shot in a stock that was nearly finish shaped. I had to scrap the stock as the customer wouldn’t want it. If had been for myself I would have thought it added a little something.

I feel your pain - did this while inletting a lock plate, if you can believe it. Guess that’s why they call it rock maple!

I used to run a Woodmizer sawmill 25 yrs ago.  I was cutting some cedar logs into boards and hit a bunch of lead balls.  Turned out it was from a fencerow in Gettysburg.

I'm not relishing the thoughts of grinding the plane blade back and sharpening it again! I did that when I was 12 years younger ....but i found this guy on another one of my forums:
Pretty interesting character!

Looks like a good candidate for a 3/4" blade. I never get rid of anything and my shop shows it.
