Sight height on a short barrel smoothbore ?
« on: May 02, 2022, 06:01:26 PM »
I just about ready to make my front sight for my 24 ga. So I’d like some advice on a good starting height to make it . It’s a short tapered round barrel 30” long .710 at muzzle and about 1.060 at breach.   Would .250” high put me in the ball park ?

Thanks ,Tim

Will there be a rear sight?

. No Sir, a very shallow groove at the breach would be about it

My 20 bore has a 31" bl., 1.1" breech and .825" muzzle, so very similar taper to yours.
I have no rear sight and my front sight is .115" tall and it's about on at 25 and 50 yards.
My aim is the front sight above the 'rear of the breech' & the ball hitting on the top of the 'blade'.
It is best to start with a slightly higher front sight and file it down as needed.
I would suggest .200" high would be a good 'starting place', but .250" would be safer.

I agree with Daryl. Start tall. Can always file it down. With tapered barrels I often have to use a tall front sight and “see” just the top of it over the breech hump to keep from shooting high at 25 yards.
