Schroyer Rifle Build
« on: April 12, 2022, 06:35:19 PM »
Recently completed a rifle after the style of George Schroyer Sr.  This one built around a Rice match grade American Heritage barrel, “A” wt. in .40 cal. x 44”  Lock is a small Silar, triggers are Davis #4’s.  Butt plate and guard are commercial castings, all other brass applications are shop made, other inlays are fine silver.  This piece borrows from a couple different original Schroyer works making this more an interpretation rather than a dedicated reproduction of a specific gun of his.  The engraving somewhat follows that seen on some of Schroyer’s work with some artistic changes requested by the customer.
The stock is made from a very nicely curled and hard piece of Sugar Maple picked up from Dunlap Woodcrafts at the 2018 CLA show in Lexington, Ky.  Stock was stained with one coat of iron nitrate over a wash of tannic acid, filled with Traditional Waterlox and finished with Chamber’s Traditional Stock Finish.  A bit of bone black was worked into the carvings during finishing to add accent there.
Barrel is finished with a rust blue.
The rifle overall is 59 1/2” - pull to the trigger is 13 1/2” and weighed in at 7 lbs. 10 oz.
I get plenty of inspiration and answers to lots of questions from others who post here on the forum.  Hopefully I am returning the favor with this post and may it spark another’s inspiration.
Any questions or comments, I’ll do my best to answer – thanks for looking.

Incredible looking gun!  Your customer will have the best of both worlds, a beautiful rifle to display and I'm predicting a very accurate one to shoot.

It appears you made silver inlays to cover the barrel lug pins?

How did you attach those?  (if my guess as to function was on?)

Thanks all for the kind words on the work.  About the barrel keys/wedges - those are simple shop made brass keys forged from 1/16" sheet.  No escutcheon is included there, the keys simply lay up against the forestock.  The keys are captured and inserted from the lock side in keeping with most, not all, of Schroyer's work

Right up there with a Brooks gun. The quality is self evident.

You did an outstanding job on the carvings, specially behind the cheek piece. Great job on the rust bluing.
Very nice rifle.
