Beaded Fusil de Chasse
« on: April 15, 2022, 03:15:30 AM »
I just finished this Fusil de Chasse as a rough copy of the bead decorated one sold by Morphys in 2018 (https://auctions.morphyauctions.com/fine_french_fusil_de_chasse_with_bead_decoration__-lot289313.aspx?fbclid=iwar3mwf52eiyut09uhpa3rm0a-hsxrvpwbdobiwaeien4yjdfs9drrlz2kd8&Cart_CategoryCmb_Callback=yes) .

This was a Track of the Wolf precarved stock which I bought on a whim discounted as a second. I was/am working on a copy from a blank of the beaded Wilson trade gun in Hamilton’s Colonial Frontier Guns and figured I could practice my beading on this one. Aside from typical issues with a precarve I had a lot of fun playing around. It took a little nerve to start drilling holes in the stock though. The beads were hammer-fit into the holes which had a small drop of superglue down in the bottom. I then went back over them with melted red wax as the original gun shows evidence of red sealing wax. The original had 244 beads, I didn't count mine....

The date is on the butt is 1759. The biggest thing that happened in North America in ‘59 was the Battle of Quebec. The stylized initials, "I(J) W," are presumably the owner’s but are coincidentally also those of General James Wolfe who famously died taking Quebec. Morphys says the original is from the contract of 1729 or 1734.  Assuming that the gun was beaded in 1759 or shortly after the gun was already 25-30 years old at that time!

Robert, that's really interesting. I've done that on a large knife handle before with good results. I did not orient the beads in the same direction as you did. In fact I tried to keep the hole hidden, but there were places where I missed the orientation. I did not bother trying to fix it and just carried on. I thought it came out very good and got lots of positive comments. I don't remember the type of glue I used, but it was mixed with a dry brown pigment to fill in the gaps and holes. The hardest part for me was determining the proper size drill bit and depth. I relied on a friction fit and added the brown pigmented glue after. My thinking was that the beads were put in first and the holes and gaps were filled up with use over time. That's really nice work and I have a good understanding of the work involved

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Robert,
I did not see you mention the size of the beads.  Inquiring minds want to know.  That rifle has a very high cool factor.  Nicely done.

David - I used Czech beads from Crazy Crow averaging about 0.164 inches or a little over 4mm (6/0 bead?).  I should have the beaded Wilson trade gun with the barrel you worked so hard on finished in a few weeks.
