RVAH-,

Charing cloth or rope or bark (or whatever) without putting it in a tin is fairly easy.  I burry whatever I want to char under about an inch of sand and then build a hot fire on top of it.  The gasses driven out of the organic material can escape through the sand but oxygen will not get back in to consume the carbonized / charred material.  It is even easier to do in a lead casting ladle.  Put whatever you want to char in the ladle, pack it down some, cover the top with sand, and set it on the coals of a hot fire.  When flames stop dancing around on the top of the sand, pull the ladle out of the fire and let it cool.  I have also rolled up some 1/4" diameter cotton rope and then completely wrapped it in river bottom clay.  Poke a very small hole through the clay all th way to the inside and then let the clay dry thoroughly.  When dry, toss it in your next fire.  Let the whole thing cool down and then break away the clay....charred rope ....or whatever.

Best,

david
Sir; Thank you for the reply. Thank you VERY much. I WILL give it a whirl, soon.  If I had tried by trial & error, I'd have gone thru miles of rope.  Thanks, again.

If you get around to making a few of these I would love one.

Funnily enough, I was thinking the very same thing.

Beautiful work as always but if I could make one small suggestion, based off of my extensive experience falling into bodies of water, it would be to add a small metal loop to the design so that it can be secured to the individual.

Hey!!  I just had a thought - how about building me one of these containers large enough to fit a BIC lighter?

Frozen Run......great idea !!! I can put a folding ring on the bottom.  Thanks

Jerry V .... Even better idea !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I think there is a smaller BIC that might even fit in this one !!!!

Dan.....Thanks for the compliment....and, by the way, for all of your posts.  I never fail to learn something from you.

I'm glad you liked my idea, and a folding ring sounds like a great solution. I'm not sure what the inside dimensions are, but besides a fire starter kit, I bet they would make outstanding pre-measured load tubes for hunters. Infinitely more PC than the plastic ones used nowadays, and way cooler on top of it. Also, a lot of engraving opportunities for customers to personalize if they wanted to, charge size data on the outside with a corresponding hash mark on the inside, different game animals, etc.
