Great looking pistol, really like the size and the belt clip.

Beautiful Mark!!
I love to see pistols by someone who knows what they are doing.  Your grandfather was one of the best.

If I’m reading that correctly, I think you’re indicating you bought the pistol from him. If so I’m glad it’s back in the family! I’ve been amazed at some of your grandfather’s work I’ve seen from back in the day. He is my favorite builder from that era. Most of his guns from the 60’s could lay on a table today beside anyone’s, and look like they were a nice used piece made 10 yrs ago.  And any of us would be blown away after seeing the date on the barrel! It was ridiculous how far ahead of his time he was!!  A true student of the Longrifle and a “bar setter” for the new revival builders.

Nice pistol.  Thanks for sharing!

Mark,
Do you know if your grandfather copied that pistol from an original?

If the components for building one like this were readily available I might have to give it a try.
Thanks for sharing the pictures!  8)

Yes it was copied from an original that had all the tell tale signs of being converted to percussion. He built it back as original flint. I will not give away all the details and the story since my friend Bob is going to write an article about it in muzzle blast.

Has the MB story been printed yet?  In other words, did I miss it?  I am fascinated by this pistol.

This past September event at Friendship was my second encounter with this pistol and I remembered it when it was new.
Tom Dawson and I became instant friends in 1967 when he and John Baird showed up at Bill Large;s shop about 10 minutes before I did and that was for me,a "red letter day" that lasted until that sad day in 1989 when I got a call telling me Tom had a heart attack and did not survive. His work set standards that have yet to be equaled. In 1972 we bought a new car,a Lincoln Continental and the first road trip was to the Dawson farm in Western Indiana. My wife and Tom's wife Helen became instant friends and our two boys,Rob who was 2 and Eric who was 6 weeks old were there as well. The next morning at 4AM Tom shook me out of bed and after a fast snack and coffee we got in the car and went to St.Louis and visited Art Resell who then owned the Hawken Shop.We also went to the top of the Gateway Arch and a great cafeteria for a meal and then back to the Dawson farm.Thank a lot Mark for reviving memories of a fine man who left way too soon.
The whole family was a fine group and I am more than happy to have known them.
