New help with reading a set of patches

Mystified by this particular "design" on the patches one of my rifles is throwing. Can't submit a pic cause it won't show up, sooooo, here's my description- the spent patches have a 7 point "star" pattern on them. Each "point" is a small nail hole. Now, I assume this design is following the rifling as it leaves the bore and I've started working with both maroon and white Scotch Brite in it. My question though, is it happening at the muzzle or full length of the rifling/barrel? This barrel(made by B. Hoyt) has about 100 rounds through it. A 1:48" twist, .42 cal., using about 45gr powder and strip ticking with spit and bear grease/bees wax mixture.
Anybody else run into this?

I would suggest that it is happening when you start the ball in the barrel. Can you post a picture of the muzzle?

you could try short starting a patched ball as you would load and pull it without shooting and see if your patch is cutting when loading.

Before you cone the muzzle you might consider just giving the crown a nice smooth polish. This might cure the 7 hole problem and improve accuracy.

The patches, as you describe them, have cuts that are characteristic of a too-sharp muzzle crown.  No need to "cone" just polish the crown to about 1/8" into the muzzle.  It might still require a short starter but will load much more easily.

Rotate the wrist & every 30 seconds or so, rotate the barrel 90 degrees.
