J Henry Boulton PA Rifle
« on: July 07, 2022, 09:47:55 PM »
Good afternoon. I am brand new here so excuse my ignorance. I have a question for those in the know. I bought a muzzleloader a few months ago from a local gun store here in Montana. The rifle is a caplock, full stock, curly maple, brass furniture and has a patch box on the stock. The barrel is octagon and it is marked “J Henry Boulton Pa”. Please see the attached photo. My question … original? Any information would be incredible. Thank you!

Can't say anyhting about the rifle without seeing more of it other than a little piece of barrel, but one thing I can tell you for 100% certain is that the marking there is entirely a modern addition, sorry to say.

I agree, I was going to say the same thing. No question.

WHAT  Eric said. J Henry  was long dead  before that barrell had his name on it.

From the single view posted, we cannot tell if the rifle is a re-marked original rifle, or a modern rifle. The barrel marking is definitely not a commercial mark for a modern black powder rifle. It might be worth posting additional pictures of the rifle including: 1) a good view of both the front and back sides showing full butt out to about 8" past lock plate area, and 2) a full view of front side showing entire gun, so we can tell you what you really have. The gun may still be a worthwhile antique rifle, just carrying a modern/recent barrel mark that may, or may not, be valid for the rifle.
