Can someone identify my Kibler SMR species of Maple?
« on: July 07, 2022, 07:12:49 PM »
The reason I ask, is I was watching some of the Kibler assembly class video's by Mike and Wayne, it came up that if you had red maple it may not be great to use aqua fortis/tannic acid as the stock may go darker than desired.
From this photo does anyone care to hazard a guess as to what kind of maple I am working with?

Looks like Red Maple to me. See how easily the wood dents with your thumbnail. Do this inside the barrel channel where it won’t be seen. Red maple will usually dent fairly easily.

Yes, most likely red maple.  Of our maple, probable 90 percent is red maple.  We have a kiln load of sugar maple coming out in a couple of weeks, but this isn’t too common.

Regardless of the species, go with iron nitrate.  It will look good. I

Using the inside of the barrel channel do some test areas using both of your chosen stains -- simple fix to your question.

I had a red maple (NOT) from Kibler.  I finished it with Kiblers iron nitrate though.   I did not neutralize it.   It turned very dark within a year or so.

I'd recommend neutralizing if you want the color to stay if you use an acid stain.
