Super wood/Basic gun
« on: October 30, 2009, 07:01:03 AM »
I was asked to put together a simple hunting rifle for a guy who had already started this kit.  This rifle was very special, as he had bought this kit to put together with his father 5 years ago.
As fate would have it, his father passed away.  For the last several years the owner worked on it, put it away, worked on it, put it away.  He just couldn't get it done.  He asked me to finish it for him.

I had to repair several mistakes, and re-do several things that he had made in he quest to put this together.  Some were not completely fixed.

I am honored that he chose me.  I hope that I did it justice for him.

As you will see, this is a very basic, plain gun.  No carving, only two inlays.  BUT..... what a piece of wood.  Amazing what a Chamber's Haines, a little Ferric Nitrate and Chamber's oil will do to a piece of wood.

Beautiful! So many nice features- the tang, pick & holder, inlay, bore design!  Nice job!

I really like the pick holder. Could you share a bit about how you made it and mounted it?

Andy,
This can't be the same rifle you showed to me. It looks too good. How on the heck did you fix that tang and the area around it?  Last I saw it the thing looked like my skateboard.

rick,

I can't take the credit for the pick holder.  It's a piece made by MBS.  As far as installing, it's quite easy.  It comes with three triangular protrusions on the back.  You just inlet them part way, and drive them in with a hammer and punch.

George,

Yeah, it's the same one.  I used some period correct epoxy.  (sorry)  It hid pretty well.

By the way..... I still need a nice, crusty bag.  AND, NO, I still haven't found the patchbox lid.  Oh, wait, there it is.  a 1" x 6" x 48" piece of cherry.

Bill,
It's a laminated piece of wood with rollerskate wheels on it .Something left over from my childhood. I probably could have used a better word to describe  the rifle.
That rifle was really a pirce of junk when I saw it a couple months ago. Some how Dane fixed it.

That buttstock curl is so attractive that it looks good without a patchbox.
