Here is a link to a quick mod I did on mine: https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=65902.msg661963#msg661963

I got tired of getting poked by the handle or having it hook my shirt as I moved around - this is how I solved that annoyance.

I bought one last month and spent a day tuning it up, deburring etc. Bought a nice chrome 5" machinery handwheel with spinner knob off E-bay and now its a joy to use. I mounted it to a floor stand also.

thanks for those replies gents.  They should help, if I can get to the point of using the thing.  I wasn't entering the right search terms before.  Right now it's a matter of getting the jaws to actually swivel like I think they are supposed to.  Not sure about one of the 'pivot' bolts.

Lots of cleaning up to do on the castings.  We'll see, now that it's actually cool enough to go into the shop.

The bolts that the jaws swivel on must be loose. If they are tight the jaws will not swivel.

I had to loosen the bolts holding the jaws when I got mine. I find that vise indispensable. I haven’t done any of the mods others have posted but now I’m thinking about it.

Oh yes, I understand the bolts need to be slightly loose to let the jaws swivel.  Right now one of the bolts is bent enough, and the holes misaligned bad enough so that one jaw will not swivel until the bolt is about 4 full turns out. Lets that jaw bind again as it tries to work it's way out of the base, and the jaw is not stable.

have a couple ideas.  I'll let you know how bad I mess things up.  If it ain't broke, I ain't done workin on it yet!

That definitely sounds messed up. I wouldn’t mistake mine for a high - end tool, but it sounds like you got a lemon. I hope you can get it functioning.

Ok, I was thinking I will put any more questions or updates into the 'tools' forum.  Don't think it belongs here, and would rather not tag along on the older threads.  Those are great for making a working version better, but this one?  if you guys disagree, let me know.  Or if you can think of a better spot, I'm all ears.  Or at least one good ear, sort of.

Truly a great vice.  Not for metalworking, but for holding a stock, it is incredible.
